Austrian plastic maker Borealis has recently introduced a new range of circular polyolefin products made of renewably-sourced feedstocks derived from waste and residue streams. The company said the new products could help its customers reduce their carbon footprint. Borealis claims that its circular polyolefin products are suitable for hygiene and food-contact applications.
In March, Borealis started production of polypropylene (PP) that is based on renewably-sourced feedstocks, including renewable propane produced by Neste in its Kallo and Beringen plants in Belgium. The renewable feedstocks are made from waste from the food and timber industries and other waste sources such as vegetable oil production.
Fossil-based feedstock still accounts for the majority of Borealis global production. However, the company has made significant progress to use more sustainable feedstocks in large-scale commercial manufacture.
