AlwaysFree: Domestic Production To Reduce India's Coal Imports: Minister

Author: SSESSMENTS

Indian minister for coal and mines Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said that the country's coal industry aims at raising production levels and reduce import requirements. The minister said that the state-owned Coal India planned to reach 1 billion tons of production by 2023-2024. He also discussed the possibility to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country's coal sector.

The minister said that India could replace 135 million tons of its 235 million tons of coal imports with domestic output while noting that the remaining 100 million ton of the imports were "non-substitutable." India is among the world's largest coal importers, second only to China.
