AlwaysFree: Australia’s Richest Man Pushes For More Ambitious Climate Goals

Author: SSESSMENTS

Andrew Forrest, Australia’s richest man who founded Fortescue Metals Group, said his country risks losing green energy advantages if its leaders fail to commit to a carbon emission reduction policy by 2050. Forrest urged the government to adopt a 2050 carbon-neutrality plan. According to him, Australia is the best place to realise its green vision, but it would depend on the government’s commitments to green energy.

Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison will attend the COP 26 climate conference in Glasgow at the end of the month. However, Morrison has been criticised for his lack of support to climate ambitions as he worried that they could cost jobs. In contrast, Forrest believed the energy transition would benefit Australia’s rural communities.

Forrest has spearheaded Fortescue’s global green energy drive, signing deals in Brazil, Indonesia, and Congo. The company plans to build a 250 MW hydrogen electrolyser at Bell Bay in Tasmania for less than AUD1 billion ($740 million). That unit will be 25 times the size of the world’s current biggest electrolyser. The final investment decision for the hydrogen project is expected to be ready this year, but it is waiting for support from the state government.
