AlwaysFree: Lunar New Year Seen Worsening Global Supply Chain Disruptions

Author: SSESSMENTS

The Lunar New Year Holiday will be celebrated in China starting on February 1 2022, 12 days earlier than this year’s celebration. This means that feeder services connecting China’s manufacturing centres to export gateways are set to be suspended earlier for the holiday. Analysts said that an earlier holiday would result in further disruptions in the global shipping and supply chain.

The prolonged suspension of feeder services could affect the global supply chain, as cargo from and to smaller ports in South China may surge earlier. As a result, global shipping lines, such as Hapag-Lloyd and ONE, have already suspended new container bookings to those ports.

To make matters worse, China requires seafarers up to seven weeks in quarantine before being allowed to return home. In addition, Chinese manufacturers are expected to release workers for the Spring Festival up to two weeks early. Industry sources said most workers would begin their holiday on January 15 or 22, indicating that ocean and trucking fees are likely to surge in the period ahead of the holiday.
