AlwaysFree: Record Cargo Volumes To Become New Normal, Long Beach Port Chief Says

Author: SSESSMENTS

Mario Cordero, the executive director of the Port of Long Beach, said high US consumer demand would continue pushing record volumes of cargo through the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex. Cordero said record container throughput at the port complex would be the new normal and would not get reduced even after the crisis. The two ports together handle more than one-third of inbound containers entering the US.

Ship-tracking data showed container carriers were anchored off the southern California coast as of December 1. That was down from over 80 waiting a few weeks ago. However, much of the decline stems from a new queuing system that extends the line by slowing down ships’ speed across the Pacific Ocean.

Companies operating at the port complex have agreed to remove charges for shipping containers outside peak hours to help clear the ports’ backlog. The ports have said they’re considering levying fines for containers that dwell on the terminals for too long. It has not been implemented, but the threat of penalties has helped alleviate bottlenecks.
