On Wednesday, the UK government said that it would move its target forward to end the utilization of coal in electricity generation by 1 year to October 2024.
Previously, in February, Energy and Climate Change Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan first announced the intention to bring forward the deadline to phase out coal from the energy system.
By 2020, Britain had slashed its coal utilization in the power sector to less than 2% compared to five years ago’s 25%.
PM Boris Johnson aims to lead the global movement of meeting global climate targets at the UN’s Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November. London’s COP26 team wishes to convince more countries to stop the international financing of coal projects by the end of 2021 and phase out such support for all fossil fuels.
On Wednesday, Trevelyan will discuss the importance of countries phasing out coal finance, as part of London Climate Action Week, in the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) Europe Roundtable.
