Early on Monday, an explosion struck the Arab Gas Pipeline in Damascus, Syria, leading to a huge fire and cut off electricity throughout the country. No deaths or injuries were reported in the incident.
The Electricity Minister Zuhair Kharbotli said that the explosion on the Arab Gas Pipeline occurred after midnight between the northeastern Damascus suburbs of Adra and Al Dhamir.
According to Kharbotli, technicians were working to handle the problem, and electricity should be reinstated in the coming hours. By Monday morning, power was gradually restored to the southern part of the country.
The 1,200 kilometers pipeline transfers gas from Egypt to Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. It supplies 7 mcm of natural gas to three power stations in the southern part of Syria, which are supplying much of the whole of Syria with electricity.
