Borealis has started using Neste-produced renewable feedstock propane to produce polypropylene (PP) at its site in Kallo and Beringen, Belgium. This marks Borealis’ first use of renewable feedstock, which replace fossil-based material in its commercial-scale PP production. This enables PP produced by Borealis’ plants in Belgium to receive the ISCC Plus certification.
The use of renewable materials is part of Borealis’ EverMinds™ ambitions in advancing the circular economy. The company aims to make all of its consumer products reusable, recyclable, or made of renewable materials by the next five years.
Neste uses its proprietary NEXBTL™ technology to produce renewable propane. Borealis then convert the propane into propylene at its PDH (propane dehydrogenation) unit in Kallo site. The propylene is then used to manufacture certified renewable PP at its facilities in Beringen and Kallo.
The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISSC) Plus certification ensures that a product is 100% renewable and sustainably manufactured. This means that the certification covers the entire value chain of a product. It also verifies the product’s traceability to the point of origin.
