- Borouge selected to support the manufacturing of drainage pipes for Line 3 phase of the Greater Cairo Metro project
- Borouge’s material to be used for the production of non-pressure drainage pipes thanks to the material’s unique stiffness and high resistance against impact, chemicals and temperatures
- Partnership expected to be the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship with EGIC that is likely to provide further business and growth opportunities for Borouge
According to the company’s website press release on February 11, 2023, Borouge Plc (ADX symbol: BOROUGE / ISIN: AEE01072B225), a leading petrochemical company that provides innovative and differentiated polyolefin solutions, announced that its block polypropylene (PP-B) materials have been selected by the consultant and contractor of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) works to manufacture drainage pipelines of the third line of the Greater Cairo Metro project in Egypt.
Through the partnership, Borouge will provide its materials to Egyptian German Industrial Corporate (EGIC) to manufacture the drainage pipes for the third phase of the third line of the metro project. EGIC approved Borouge’s materials after thorough testing by a leading German third-party laboratory.
Khalfan AlMuhairi, Senior Vice President Regional, Middle East and Africa, Borouge, said: “We are delighted to be selected to partner with EGIC on this major and important infrastructure project in Egypt. Borouge’s materials were selected as the optimum choice by the project team for the third phase of Greater Cairo Metro Line 3 given their market leading durability and reliability qualities. We expect the partnership with EGIC to be the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship that will provide more business and growth opportunities to Borouge, as we continue to meet the highest customer demands and boost the sustainability of piping networks, helping to eliminate leakage, and offer energy savings.”
Pipes made from PP-B materials are recognised for their flexibility and contribution to reducing the risk of leakage. The smooth inner walls of the pipes ensure high gravity flow rates and minimise the risk of blockage whilst their excellent impact resistance ability makes them simple to install especially in winter. Borouge’s materials are designed to meet the highest demands due to their high impact resistance combined with good stiffness, excellent chemical resistance and temperature performance.
The third line of the metro is considered the first transverse route to connect the east and west of Greater Cairo as it covers a length of 41.2 km and includes 34 stations. It is implemented in four stages. Three stages have already been completed and are operational covering a length of about 24 km. The third phase of third line of the Greater Cairo Metro covers 17.7 km in length and includes 15 stations (8 underground, 5 elevated and 2 grade level).
The third line of Greater Cairo Metro recently won the Arab Government Excellence Award under the category of ‘Best Arab Government Infrastructure Development Project’.
Borouge’s sustainable piping solutions have been used in various key development projects across the MENA region such as Bahr Al Baqar Wastewater Plant, the world’s largest water treatment plant; and the Jubail-Riyadh water transmission line, one of the world’s largest. Borouge’s ‘Made in UAE’ infrastructure solutions are ideally suitable to make safe, reliable and durable pipelines that are carefully developed using unique advanced technologies to withstand long operational durations.
