BP entered a partnership with Aria Energy in a project to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) to be used as road fuels in California. The RNG will be produced by using methane from California dairy farm waste. The move is part of BP’s efforts to become a net-zero company by 2050. A study by the US Department of Energy found that RNG-fueled cars have 95% lower emissions than gasoline- and diesel-fueled vehicles.
BP has been involved in the RNG sector since 2018 with Clean Energy Fuels, America’s largest RNG producer. They also added a second RNG project in 2020. Clean Energy Fuels accounts for about half of RNG sales in the US. Its customers include LA Metro, UPS, New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and Republic Services.
