On Wednesday, Uniper said that it will close one unit in its 2 GW Ratcliffe coal plant in Britain next year, two years ahead of the facility’s full shutdown plan.
A 500 MW unit at the plant will be closed at the end of September 2022. The whole Ratcliffe coal-fired power station in Nottinghamshire will be shut at the end of September 2024, in line with the government’s coal phase-out date in October 2024.
The early closing of the unit will reduce the coal generation in the UK system and Uniper will make Ratcliffe become a zero-carbon technology and energy hub for the East Midlands.
The Ratcliffe plant was commissioned in 1986 and now is one of two remaining coal plants in England in operation. Last year, the company had submitted a planning application for the development of an energy recovery facility at the site.
