Wu Liangyou, an official with China’s National Health Commission, said the new COVID-19 outbreak, which had plagued the country’s northern region, could increase in coming days in more areas. Mi Feng, a spokesperson with the commission, added that the latest outbreak came from a new overseas origin and has spread to 11 provinces since October 17. On Saturday, China reported 30 new local COVID-19 transmissions in Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Ningxia, Hebei, Hunan, Yunnan, and Shaanxi.
Beijing, which will host the Winter Olympics in February, postponed a marathon scheduled for October 31. People entering the capital are required to present a negative COVID-19 test and conduct 14 days of monitoring. The city also blocks the entry of people coming from places with confirmed infections. Some cities in Gansu and Inner Mongolia suspended bus and taxi services due to the virus. Among them is Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu province.
