China is planning to increase domestic crude oil and natural gas production in 2020 as a measure to protect its energy security. According to official data, the world’s largest energy consumer aims at raising crude oil output to 193 million tons or 3.85 million bpd this year. This figure represents an increase of 1% from 191 million tons of output in 2019.
Meanwhile, natural gas output is targeted to reach 181 bcm in 2020, 4.3% higher than last year’s actual production of 73.62 bcm, according to plans by the National Energy Administration (NEA).
NEA said that to ramp up oil and gas production, China would focus on four key energy production bases: three onshore fields in Sichuan province, Xinjiang region, and the Ordos Basin, as well as an onshore area in Bohai Bay in northern China.
NEA’s annual plan also includes a target to generate an additional 900 gigawatts power from non-fossil fuels this year. NEA also aims at lowering the share of coal in China’s primary energy mix from 57.7% in 2019 to 57.5% in 2020.
