Colorado Springs Utilities said it would phase out coal burning at its Martin Drake Plant and plans to generate power at the plant using natural gas. The company added the plant would receive its last coal delivery in August and would start gas burning by September 2. Colorado Springs also plans to add six smaller natural gas turbines to the plant in early 2022 to offset the scrapped coal capacity. This move is part of the company’s efforts to cut CO2 emissions by 80% by 2030.
