The Environment Department (DOE) reported no environmental pollution in the surrounding areas of Pengerang Integrated Complex in Johor, Malaysia, after an explosion that hit the refinery’s diesel hydrotreating unit on March 15. According to DOE, an investigation conducted in the premises showed no odour nor smoke that could affect residents and the public in the nearby area.
The air quality and volatile organic gases reading in Kampung Lepau, 2.17km away from the complex, showed results below the acceptable level and deemed as safe. Petronas still monitors the air quality in the premises although no harmful or hydrocarbon gases have so far been detected. The DOE noted the authorities and Petronas are still conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
