AlwaysFree: EIA Expects US Coal-Fired Power Capacity To Shrink By 2035

Author: SSESSMENTS

The Energy Information Administration on Wednesday said that 28% of existing coal-fired power capacity in the United States is slated to end operations by 2035. That represents a reduction in coal-fired power generation capacity of 59 GW. For comparison, 212 GW of coal capacity was active in the US as of September 2021. The EIA said that the average age of active coal-fired power plants in the US is 45 years. However, plants that are set to retire are not necessarily the oldest ones. The agency said some operators had reported retirement plans for units built in the 1980s and 1990s.
