The European Union will work with South Africa in a project to accelerate the country’s exit from coal. The partnership will be officially launched at the COP26 climate summit on October 31-November 12 in Glasgow, Scotland. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday said that the EU would help South Africa phase out coal faster and develop renewables earlier. She also added that the US and the UK would also be involved in the project, which will include support to the regions and workers in coal sectors affected by the phaseout. In 2020, South Africa generated 90% of its electricity from coal.
