On Wednesday, the European Commission approved a scheme to pay operators of the hard coal-fired power plant in Germany to shut their stations earlier than planned to accommodate the country’s accelerated exit from the fuel.
European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager commented, “Phasing out hard coal-fired power plants contributes in a crucial way to the transformation to a climate-neutral economy, in line with the European Green Deal objectives.”
