On Friday, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen expressed her opinion that the EU and UK might require more time to decide a new trade relationship with Britain.
Earlier in December, von der Leyen said that Britain’s hard deadline for a new trade deal with the EU, set in December 2020, was extremely short to discuss the complexity of the issues.
“I suppose it would be better if all parties evaluate the situation mid-year and then if considered necessary, the transition period could be extended,” von der Leyen said.
