ExxonMobil on September 11 announced a successful trial of bio-based very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) with a maximum sulfur content of 0.5%. The new fuel was tested on a vessel owned by shipping company Stena Bulk during commercial operation. Exxon claims that the bio-based VLSFO can reduce CO2 emission by up to 40% compared to petroleum-based VLSFO. Exxon aims at making the new fuel commercially available later this year, firstly in Rotterdam and then in other bunkering hubs across the globe.
