On Thursday, Freeport LNG is granted the permit to extend the construction of its proposed fourth liquefaction train at its LNG export plant in Texas by three more years until May 2026.
Previously, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the construction in May 2019 to be completed in May 2023.
Freeport has delayed the final investment decision (FID) of the fourth train earlier this year as prices in Europe and Asia collapsed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company had stated that the FID is not to be made this year due to the current market conditions, but gave an estimation that it could start the construction as soon as mid-2021 if the conditions improve.
Each of the trains that Freeport planned is set to produce roughly 5 mtpa of liquefied natural gas (LNG) or 0.7 bcfd of natural gas.
