The director of India’s state-owned gas distributor GAIL on Friday said that the natural gas share in the country’s energy mix could reach 10% in 2025 from 6.2% currently. According to E S Ranganathan, massive investment and infrastructure development would support the increase in India’s gas demand. Narendra Modi’s administration has aimed at increasing the natural gas share in the country’s energy mix to 15% by 2030.
India has invested billions of dollars in expanding gas pipeline networks and improving import capacities to meet growing domestic gas consumption. It is also expanding city gas distribution to raise the share of gas as cooking fuel. Ranganathan added that the government has also enhanced domestic gas and oil exploration and production by enacting several policy measures over the past few years.
