AlwaysFree: Honeywell Solstice® Products Selected As Champion Case In UNIDO Global Call 2022

Author: SSESSMENTS

According to the company’s website press release on January 17, 2023, Honeywell's Solstice® low-global-warming-potential (GWP) products and solutions have been selected as one of the champion cases for the 2022 United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Global Call, sponsored by UNIDO and initiated by the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) in Shanghai. Honeywell collaborates with partners and customers to contribute to low-carbon transformation through innovative products and technologies in an effort to shape a more sustainable future. This selection highlights how Honeywell's contribution to sustainability initiatives has been recognized by international organizations.

With the theme of "green and innovative technology solutions towards Net-Zero," 2022 UNIDO Global Call focuses on identifying readily applicable and scalable solutions from leading companies in the fields of sustainability, healthcare, digital technology, agriculture and food. It aims to achieve economic and environmental recovery and sustainable industrial growth in the post-epidemic era through international cooperation and technological innovation around the world. After a rigorous review process and a systematic evaluation by the jury, Honeywell's Solstice low-GWP products and solutions stood out from more than 400 cases around the world, and was named one of the seven winners in the 2022 UNIDO Global Call.

Honeywell Solstice products are made from Honeywell's breakthrough hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) technology, which helps customers lower their carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency without sacrificing end-product performance. The Solstice portfolio of products includes refrigerants for vehicle, commercial and residential air conditioning applications, heat pumps, blowing agents for insulation, aerosol propellants, solvents for cleaning solutions, and is being evaluated for use in metered dose inhalers. Using Honeywell Solstice products has helped avoid the potential release of the equivalent of more than 295 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, comparable to eliminating emissions of more than 62 million cars.

"We are honored to be selected as one of the final winners for the '2022 UNIDO Global Call’ with Honeywell’s Solstice low-GWP solutions. This is another powerful endorsement of Honeywell's HFO technology," said Henry Liu, Vice President and General Manager of Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies for Asia Pacific. "More and more countries and organizations are implementing net-zero strategies to better meet global climate targets. Honeywell is committed to fully leveraging our technology and innovation to support our partners and provide ready-now solutions that help to drive the creation of a more sustainable future."

Honeywell has already invested a billion dollars in HFO technology development and new capacity, having anticipated the need for lower-GWP solutions to combat climate change more than a decade ago. In recent years, many countries and regions have been phasing down the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) based on the requirements of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. With the amendment in force in China since September 2021, domestic industrial customers are actively looking for reliable alternative solutions to reduce HFCs in phases and respond to China's Dual Carbon goals of achieving peak carbon by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

Honeywell's Solstice low-GWP products and solutions are widely used in the Chinese market. In the automotive industry, Honeywell provides low-GWP automotive refrigerant HFO-1234yf refrigerant to customers such as Volvo and NIO in China, providing a lower carbon driving environment for Chinese automotive owners. By the end of 2022, Solstice yf, was used in about 185 million vehicles globally.

In the biopharmaceutical industry, Sinopharm Shanghai Biomedical Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of China National Pharmaceutical Group, has adopted Honeywell's lower-GWP, energy-efficient refrigerant Solstice N40 (R-448A) in its vaccine cold storage expansion project in Shanghai, to store a wide range of vaccines for use in Shanghai, including the company’s COVID-19 vaccine.

Honeywell's Solstice low-GWP solutions have received numerous industry awards and recognitions. In 2022, Honeywell Solstice solutions won the Carbon Neutral Solution Award at 2022 International Green Zero-Carbon Festival and Seal Sustainable Innovation Award, an international environmental award. Solstice solutions were selected as one of the first 25 Excellent Cases in 2022 Green and Low-carbon Development of Foreign-invested Enterprises in Shanghai.

Honeywell has a decades-long history of innovation to help its customers meet their environmental and social goals. In 2021, about 60 percent of Honeywell's investment in new product introduction research and development was directed towards products that improve environmental and social outcomes for customers. Honeywell is committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its operations and facilities by 2035, and recently announced a new set of commitments that further advance its sustainability goals, including committing to set a science-based target with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) that will include scope 3 emissions and participation in the U.S. Department of Energy's Better Climate Challenge.
