IEnova, a subsidiary of US-based utility Sempra Energy, may be interested to jointly build a new natural gas liquefaction terminal with Mexico’s state utility CFE. The new terminal could be IEnova’s second in the country, after the Energia Costa Azul, or ECA currently under development. IEnova delayed a final investment decision on ECA as the Mexican government halted all permit processing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
ECA will be Mexico’s first LNG export terminal. ECA will compete with US Gulf LNG exporters for the Asian markets. Exporting LNG to Asia from the Mexican Pacific coast offers a shorter route and cheaper costs as it bypasses congestion and fees of the Panama Canal.
