Textile forums in India have appealed to the ministries of textile, commerce, and finance to remove anti-dumping duty on viscose staple fiber (VSF).
Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) convenor Prabhu Dhamodharan argued that the duty has prompted the entire value chain to struggle to compete in the global market.
China has been dumping yarn in the country and the landing cost of Chinese yarn is cheaper by INR20/kg (USD0.27/kg) than Indian spinners’ manufacturing cost. India’s import of VSF spun yarn has gotten to 56,262 t in the fiscal year 2019-2020, compared to merely 2,022 t in FY2016-2017.
According to ITF, the global man-made fiber-based textile and clothing market is now being dominated by Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Cambodia as they have access to fiber at international prices, which make them competitive even without having their own source of the raw materials.
