AlwaysFree: Indonesia’s Pertamina Considers Hydrogen To Meet 2026 Clean Energy Target

Author: SSESSMENTS

Indonesia’s national oil company Pertamina is eyeing renewable energy sources, including hydrogen, to meet its target to expand clean energy power generation capacity by 10 GW by 2026 as part of its 2050 green transition plan. Pertamina said that hydrogen and other projects would contribute to 1 GW of the 10 GW target. Gas-to-power operations will make up the majority of the expansion at 6 GW. The remaining 3 GW will come from other renewable energy sources such as geothermal. Pertamina’s green transition scenario projects that geothermal will account for 47% of domestic primary energy consumption in 2050.

Pertamina Power and New Renewable Energy (PNRE) said it is eyeing initiatives such as blue and green hydrogen as part of a $12-billion investment to reach the 2026 target. PNRE also recently inked an initial deal with Japanese upstream firm Japex to conduct a study on carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) methods to cut emissions from the Gundih and Sukowati oil fields.

PNRE CEO Dannif Danusaputro said his company would support Indonesia’s target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 29% by 2030 and to net-zero by 2060. Despite the emission reduction goal, the Indonesian government plans to increase crude oil production from 707,000 bpd in 2020 to 1 million bpd in 2030.
