Production started at the $3.6 billion offshore Leviathan field in Israel on Tuesday. In the coming weeks, Israel will have multi-billion-dollar gas export deals with Jordan and Egypt.
Despite court petitions by groups opposing the project and regulatory delays, natural gas began flowing from Leviathan, Israel’s largest field. Operations at the Leviathan field will double the amount of Israeli-produced gas.
Israel will be able to shift away from more polluting fuels, like coal, for electricity generation due to the gas supply from Leviathan wells.
From the platform, the Leviathan gas will be transported via a subsea pipeline connected to the country’s transmission system. From there, the gas delivered to consumers throughout the country. Within the next 48 hours, exports to Jordan will start.
