AlwaysFree: LyondellBasell Announces Net-Zero Emission Targets By 2050

Author: SSESSMENTS

LyondellBasell announced on September 29 that it planned to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The plan includes reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 absolute emissions by 30% in 2030 relative to 2020 levels and having 50% of its electricity sourced from renewables. LyondellBasell’s emission reduction measures will include enhancing energy management, utilising low-emission steam, minimising flarings, using low-carbon fuels, using renewable power, and upgrading and electrifying steam cracker furnaces.

LyondellBasell said it would increase the use of renewable electricity to 4.9 million MWh annually, which will cut its Scope 2 emissions by 2 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). The company also plans to phase out coal at its production site in Wesseling, Germany, by December 2023. The company has agreed with Evonik to buy high-pressure steam generated from natural gas to power its olefin and polyolefin production at the site. The project is expected to reduce the site’s CO2 emissions by around 170,000 tons annually.
