Nestle’s announced its share of reusable or recyclable plastics in the product packaging is increased to 87%, making a progress toward the goal of 100% by 2025, and also gives innovation examples to cut plastic waste. In a media briefing, the food giant that is regularly mentioned as one of the top plastic polluters by environmental groups such as Greenpeace has promised to reduce new plastics usage by a third by 2025. The company also spent approximately two billion Swiss franc to support recycled plastics.
Packaging plays an important role in preserving the safety of our food products, but on the other hand the pollution caused by plastic continues to be major environmental issues. Nestle head of operations, Magdi Batato added in the virtual meeting that as the commitment has been made, the company will deliver. The company also recently launched a pet-food refillable system in Chile allowing deliveries without the need of extra packaging. Waste caused by online-delivery packaging and takeaway food containers has increased during the global pandemic as more people use online groceries order and food delivery.
One of Nestle’s aspect strategies is eliminating packaging, while another is plastic replacement with more sustainable materials. The company already sells Kitkat chocolate bars in paper packaging, and said that its engineers had perfected a new kind of recyclable paper which used to wrap Maggi bouillon cubes and will soon be launched in France.
As for the goal for the paper packaging usage, Batato said it was difficult since there was no all-around solution for all products and geographical locations. The usage of plastics will still continue, as it remained a component in the packaging.
