NOVA Chemicals Corporation on Tuesday announced a long-term partnership with Merlin Plastics Supply Inc. to advance the plastic circular economy by increasing the supply of high-quality, post-consumer recyclates (PCR) for consumer packaging. The agreement marks NOVA’s first commitment in the PCR market.
NOVA-Merlin partnership will take benefits from growing global demand for high-quality PCR. International brand owners have committed to increasing recycled content in their plastic packaging as worldwide consumers become increasingly aware of environmental issues. Most of the brand owners have pledged to include 25% PCR in their packaging by 2025.
Under the deal, NOVA Chemical will fund a multi-million-dollar project to speed up Merlin’s expansion into PCR for food contact applications. Through this financing, NOVA Chemical will be able to secure a reliable PCR supply to offer to its customers.
NOVA’s funding will help Merlin to upgrade its processing plant in Delta, British Columbia so it can convert post-consumer plastic container packaging into recyclates for food packaging applications. Merlin is Canada’s largest plastics recycler which currently operates two state-of-the-art recycling facilities in British Columbia.
