AlwaysFree: OPAL, NextEra Unit To Build RNG Production Facility In Minnesota

Author: SSESSMENTS

OPAL Fuels LLC and a unit of NextEra Energy said on Wednesday that they had agreed to build the first landfill renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility in Minnesota. Under the agreement, both companies will work together to convert one of NextEra’s existing power plants into an RNG production site. The new facility will capture 3,200 standard cubic feet of landfill gas every minute and process it into more than 6 million gas gallon equivalents of RNG annually.

The RNG will be cleaned to improve its purity before being consumed on-site or injected into natural gas pipelines owned by a unit of Xcel Energy Inc. Landfill gas is mostly methane, a potent greenhouse gas energy contributing to global warming. Landfill gas comes from food waste, animal waste, sewage treatment plants, and other industrial and agricultural operations.
