The Lahore High Court of Pakistan’s Punjab region has banned the use of one-time-use plastic bags in Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
The ban will be imposed in phases and has been applied in different districts.
Previously, the Lahore High Court has banned the single-use plastic bags in all Lahore’s megastores with a 15-day deadline to comply and switch to alternative shopping bags.
The Lahore ban followed the ban in the federal capital Islamabad since August 14, 2019, as part of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Clean Green Pakistan campaign. In Islamabad, it is now illegal to manufacture, sell and distribute plastic bags with a PKR500,000 (USD2,975.6) ban for producers, PKR50,000 (USD297.5) for sellers, and PKR5,000 (USD29.7) for users.
Other big cities in Pakistan such as Sindh and Balochistan have also taken such initiative by banning non-biodegradable plastic bags.
