Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin stated that the country will enter a recovery phase of the movement control order (MCO) beginning June 10 until August 31.
Previously, the MCO was first imposed on March 18 to restrict the spread of coronavirus. It has been extended four times until June 9. The recovery phase is part of Malaysia’s exit strategy from the MCO after the infection rate trend slowed down.
According to the PM, most of the social, educational, religious, business activities, as well as economic sectors, will reopen in phases with standard operating procedures. Except for areas under enhanced MCO, the interstate travel will be permitted which leads to domestic tourism.
Malaysians returning from foreign countries will be allowed to do self-quarantine at home for 14 days instead of using quarantine centers if they are tested negative for the virus.
Activities involving huge crowds, such as sports or religious activities, however, are still forbidden.
Malaysia has rolled out stimulus packages worth a total of MYR295 billion (USD69 billion) to regenerate the economy.
The fiscal deficit is likely almost double close to 6% of its gross domestic product (GDP) to finance the stimulus. The PM also said that 83.5% of workers have returned to work nowadays.
