Pengerang Refining and Petrochemical (PRefChem) confirmed a fire and explosion incident at the Pengerang Integrated Complex in Johor, Malaysia, at 10.50 pm local time on Sunday. PRefChem is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Malaysia’s Petronas.
The complex is able to process 300,000 barrels of crude per day to produce low sulfur jet fuel, diesel, gasoline, and feedstocks for the integrated petrochemical complex, with a nameplate capacity of 3.6 million tons/year.
PRefChem’s spokesman said that the situation had been put under control after the company activated the Emergency Response Team and coordinated with related authorities. According to the spokesman, PRefChem’s primary focus at the moment is to ensure the safety of the people and the environment. However, he did not disclose the damage nor the affected units due to the incident.
