AlwaysFree: Project To Fight River Plastic Pollution Launched By Ocean Cleanup Foundation

Author: SSESSMENTS

A new device unveiled by Ocean Cleanup Foundation to stop plastic pollution from reaching the sea in the first place.

Two things need to be done to solve the plastic pollution problem. The first is cleaning up what’s already in the oceans. The next is preventing more plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place

To collect rubbish, the foundation's ocean system uses a large floating boom. The foundation managed to pick up plastic from the high seas for the first time after the system’s initial setbacks and adjustments.

The system has already been tested on rivers in Klang (Malaysia) and in Jakarta (Indonesia). Two more are planned for Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and Can Tho in Vietnam's Mekong Delta.

The foundation is still testing the river system and until a rollout phase has been completed, it will not give out numbers on plastics collected. Thousands of kilograms of detritus per day can be extracted by each device.
