Rio Tinto and Sumitomo Chemical said they would work together to study the construction of a hydrogen pilot plant in Australia. The plant will be built in Rio Tinto’s Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone, Queensland. If the project proceeds, the pilot plant would produce hydrogen for the recently announced Gladstone Hydrogen Ecosystem. Rio Tinto Australia Chief Executive Kellie Parker said the plant would help the company achieve its 2030 and 2050 climate targets. It is also in line with the Australian government’s plan to turn Gladstone into a clean hydrogen hub. Rio Tinto and Sumitomo did not disclose further details about the project.
