AlwaysFree: SABIC Expands Portfolio Of Engineering Thermoplastics With Recycled Content

Author: SSESSMENTS

Saudi petrochemical maker SABIC said that the company’s engineering thermoplastics business is expanding the portfolio of resins containing high levels of post-consumer resin (PCR). The PCR content in SABIC’s CYCOLOY™ and LEXAN™ resins reached 30%. SABIC internal assessments showed these compounds enable 25% carbon footprint reduction and 30% energy saving, compared to using virgin resins. These resins are suitable for applications, including consumer electronics and accessories.

The extended range of resins contains post-consumer polycarbonate from optical media and water bottles. SABIC is also studying the use of post-consumer polycarbonate from end-of-life auto parts such as dashboards and headlamps. The company said it implements strict standards for PCR acquired from its approved suppliers.

Moving forward, SABIC intends to offer more grades with PCR content to meet various requirements. The company also plans to provide resins with PCR content of up to 60% in 2021. SABIC’s new PCR materials are part of the company’s TRUCIRCLE™ products and services. TRUCIRCLE consists of SABIC’s circular innovations aimed to help manufacturers and brand owners to access more sustainable materials.
