AlwaysFree: SCS Members Evaluate Depolymerisation Technology For PS Recycling

Author: SSESSMENTS

Members of the Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) initiative, including INEOS Styrolution, Trinseo, Total, and Versalis are evaluating a depolymerisation technology to recycle polystyrene. The catalytic microwave depolymerisation technology is developed by Canada-based Pyrowave, a company focusing on microwave-based technology.

Pyrowave’s depolymerisation technology offers a more decentralised approach compared to other chemical recycling technologies. It is also highly complementary to the other recycling methods which are currently scaling up in Europe, according to Jens Kathmann, the Secretary-General at SCS.

SCS members aim at speeding up the time-to-market and volume of recycled polystyrene. They are cooperating to develop various technologies, including dissolution, as well as mechanical and chemical recycling for food-grade materials.
