On Monday, French energy major Total signed a security pact with the government of Mozambique for the protection of its USD20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in the country.
Mozambique’s minister of mineral resources and energy Ernesto Elias Tonela commented, “This pact bolsters security measures and endeavours to create a safe operating environment for partners like Total which enables their ongoing investment in Mozambican industry.”
Total’s project in Mozambique includes the development of the Golfinho and Atum natural gas fields in the Offshore Area 1 concession, which contains more than 60 Tcf of gas, and the construction of a liquefaction plant with a capacity of 13.1 mtpa.
The country has been struggling to fight a low-level insurgency against militias in the northern part of the country which is rich with gas.
