AlwaysFree: Trafigura Partners With Braskem On First Carbon-Neutral Naphtha Shipment

Author: SSESSMENTS

Commodity trader Trafigura Group and Brazilian petrochemical maker Braskem worked together to ship the first carbon-neutral cargo. The 325,000-barrel shipment was delivered last week from Corpus Christi in Texas to Braskem’s facility via the Brazilian port of Aratu. Trafigura noted that the cargo was carried by the most energy-efficient ship available at the time. The trader also said it worked with the shipowner to minimise actual emissions during the cargo transportation.

Trafigura said a combination of efficiency measures and some carbon offsets programs would offset the CO2 emitted from the oil extraction, transportation, and processing to produce the naphtha. The Verified Carbon Standard will independently verify nature-based projects in Indonesia that will provide Trafigura with high-quality carbon offsets by protecting or restoring natural ecosystems.

Trafigura said it would open a carbon trading desks based in Houston and Singapore. Transactions of carbon-neutral feedstocks are gaining traction as companies seek to cut their carbon footprint. Braskem, a world leader in biopolymers production, is committed to implementing a carbon-neutral circular economy strategy. The carbon-neutral trade with Trafigura is part of that strategy, a company official said.
