On Tuesday, Turkey stated that the operations of its Yavuz energy drillship in the disputed Mediterranean waters off Cyprus have been prolonged until October 12. The move could trigger tension between Ankara and the Greek Cypriot government.
The energy drillship will be accompanied by three other Turkish ships. Ankara added that all vessels are strongly advised not to enter the area.
Turkey had started the oil and gas drilling near Cyprus in 2019, and Cyprus’ internationally-recognized Greek Cypriot government has long been in dispute with the action.
For Turkey, Cyprus’ right to explore in the seas around the island is questionable as it maintains that the Nicosia administration does not represent the interests of Turkish Cypriots.
