AlwaysFree: Turkmengaz, Kawasaki Discuss Progress On Turkmen GTG Plant Expansion

Author: SSESSMENTS

State-owned Turkmengaz and Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. held a virtual meeting on August 26 to discuss plans to construct a second natural gas-to-gasoline (GTG) plant at the newly-commissioned complex at Ovadan-Depe near Ashgabat, in the Akhal region of Turkmenistan. According to a report by the Turkmen state media, the expansion project is part of the country’s bilateral cooperation with Japan.

The report, however, did not disclose the cost, the capacity, and the timeframe of the new project. Turkmengaz signed an MoU with Kawasaki and Sojitz Corp in 2019 for design and construction of the second GTG plant, which will likely use Haldor Topsoe AS’s proprietary Topsoe Improved Gasoline Synthesis (Tigas) technology.

Turkey’s Rönesans Endüstri Tesisleri Inşaat Sanaýi ve Ticaret AŞ and Kawasaki built the first GTG plant in the complex. The plant officially entered service in June 2019. It uses Haldor Topsoe Tigas technology to convert 1.785 Bcm/year of natural gas into 600,000 tons.year of Euro 5-compliant A-93 gasoline, 115,000 tons/year of liquefied gas, and 12,000 tons/year of diesel.
