Unilever, a leading consumer brand owner, on September 1, announced that it would eliminate fossil fuels in its cleaning and laundry products by 2030. The company will also work on new ways to lower the products’ carbon footprint. This move is part of Unilever’s €1-billion ($1.19-billion) Clean Future investment aimed at the complete transition toward recycled and renewable sources from fossil fuel-derived chemicals to.
The Clean Future drive is initiated by Unilever’s Home Care division to formulate less carbon-intensive manufacturing and packaging processes of the company’s cleaning and laundry products, which include well-known brands such as Sunlight, Cif, Domestos, and OMO (Persil). The initiative is also part of Unilever’s pledge to remove 20% carbon footprint from the company’s product formulations.
The Clean Future investment also supports research on biotechnology, low carbon chemistry, and CO2 and waste utilisation. It will also be used to develop measures to reduce virgin plastic use by 50% in 2025 as well as water-efficient and biodegradable product formulations.
