ExxonMobil on October 26 said it supported a global initiative to reduce methane emissions launched by the United States and the European Union. More than 30 countries have now joined the Global Methane Pledge, with more countries expected to join at the upcoming COP26 climate meeting in Glasgow, Scotland. The Pledge aims at cutting the world’s methane emissions by 30% by 2030 versus 2020 baselines.
Exxon said it would work with governments to help achieve the objectives of the Pledge. The company has also planned to reduce its methane emissions by 40-50% by 2025 from 2016 levels. It will invest in developing, testing, and applying new methane detection and mitigation technologies. It also plans to cooperate with methane emitters in other sectors such as agriculture, livestock, and landfills.
