AlwaysFree: US Gas Pipeline Operators Pledge To Cut Emissions To Zero

Author: SSESSMENTS

Members of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, including Kinder Morgan Inc., Enbridge Inc., DTE Midstream Llc., and Williams Cos., have pledged to make their operations emissions-free by 2050. It marks the group’s most ambitious climate goal after committing to cut methane emissions in 2018.

The latest commitment is voluntary and includes direct gas emissions from operations such as gas leaks from pipelines, tanks, and compressor stations, called Scope-1 emissions. It also covers the Scope-2 emissions, which include emissions generated when these companies consume energy. However, it does not encompass Scope-2 emissions, which are generated when end-users burn the gas to generate energy.

INGAA members operate about 200,000 of the 300,000 miles of transmission pipes across the US. Its latest commitment comes as President Joe Biden promises new policies to cut greenhouse gas emissions and make the US electrical grid emissions-free by 2035. Hence, the pledge to cut emissions to zero can help ward these companies off political attacks.
