AlwaysFree: Use Of Plastic Bags In Jakarta Is Prohibited Starting July 1

Author: SSESSMENTS

Starting July 1, 2020 the use of disposable plastic bags is prohibited in malls, convenience stores, and traditional markets in Jakarta. So far, a socialization ban has been conducted on the use of plastic bags to 82 malls, more than 3,000 supermarkets (minimarkets, supermarkets, and hypermarkets), and 153 traditional markets. In its implementation, officers from the Jakarta Provincial Government will oversee the trade facilities.

These trading facilities are obliged to forbid customers to shop using disposable plastic bags. Even though this ban is mandatory, if later on the use of disposable plastic bags is still found, the Provincial Government will not immediately impose sanctions.

Mall managers, supermarkets, and public markets can be subjected to administrative sanctions if it is found that there is still the use of plastic bags with the details as stated in the regulation. The written warning is given in stages. First for 14 x 24 hours. If not heeded, then a second warning given for 7 x 24. If not heeded, then a third warning given for 3 x 24 hours. Managers who do not heed written warning letters 3 x 24 hours after the third warning is issued are subject to forced money at least Rp.5-25 million.
