Anti-dumping duty may be imposed by India on imports of Polystyrene from six countries with a view to guard domestic players from cheap imports from these countries. The six countries are the US, UAE, Iran, Malaysia, Singapore and Chinese Taipei.
The imposition of the anti-dumping duty on the product from these six countries has been recommended by the commerce ministry's investigation arm Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) after conducting a probe.
The range of US$35 to US$474 per tonne is the recommended duty. During the period of investigations (January-December 2018), imports of the product from these countries have increased to 30037 tonnes from 16915 tonnes in 2015-2016. While the duty recommended by DGTR, the final call will be taken by India’s finance ministry to impose the same.
To provide a level-playing field to domestic manufacturers, a country is allowed to impose tariffs on such dumped products. Only after a thorough investigation by a quasi-judicial body, the duty is imposed.
