Market sources informed SSESMENTS.COM that Borealis on Monday invoked force majeure on its 625,000 tons/year steam cracker operations in Stenungsund, Sweden, after a fire incident. Following the incident, the producer shut the cracker and its LDPE plant, resulting in shortages in certain LDPE grades, including film, masterbatch, and wire and cable.
Borealis has notified the affected customers saying it would minimize the impact by supplying them from its other polyolefin production facilities. The company, however, did not say when it would revoke the FM and restart the LDPE unit. Market sources told SSESSMENTS.COM that the FM only affected the LDPE unit, while other polyolefins units in Stenungsund continued operating.
