Market sources reported to SSESSMENTS.COM that ferric chloride had leaked into the Mediterranean from a storage tank at Kem One’s polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production site at Berre, France. According to the sources, the spill took place at about 1.50 AM local time on Thursday when the liquid was discharged into the sea via a storm sewer.
Local emergency services are assessing the damage while maritime authorities are investigating the extent of the leakage. Boating, fishing, and swimming are now prohibited in the coastline near the site. Local media reported that the leakage has caused about six-hectare slick. Kem One’s Berre site can produce up to 290,000 tons/year of suspension PVC.
