Market sources in India informed SSESSMENTS.COM on a chemical leak at LG Polymers India Pvt.Ltd. According to market sources, the initial reports showed that styrene gas leak occurred from LG Polymers India plant at Visakhapatnam on Thursday, May 7 between 2.30-3.00 AM local time and spread over a radius of about three kilometers. The raw material, styrene, is highly flammable and releases a poisonous gas when burnt.
The incident killed at least nine people and caused more than 300 people to be admitted to the hospital and the evacuation of three nearby villages. According to the company’s website, LG Polymers India Pvt.Ltd produces GPPS, HIPS, EPS and EPC at the complex. The company was established in 1961 as Hindustan Polymers for manufacturing Polystyrene and its co-polymers at Visakhapatnam, India. Taken over by LG Chem (South Korea), Hindustan Polymers was renamed as LG Polymers India Private Limited (LGPI) in July, 1997.
